LETTERING IN THE SYSTEM OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION: UKRAINIAN AND GLOBAL EXPERIENCE

Purpose. The article aims to provide a review and analytical examination of the current state of lettering research within the system of visual communication as explored by Ukrainian and international scholars and practitioners. Methodology. The study applies methods of art analysis, comparative and contrastive approaches, and empirical observation. The art-historical and comparative methods are directed at studying theoretical positions and practical solutions that demonstrate the development of lettering as a visual phenomenon within visual communication. The comparative method made it possible to identify common trends and distinctive features of lettering. The empirical base comprises contemporary examples of poster design, book and magazine covers, logotypes, and digital and print solutions in which lettering is used as a form of visual communication. Results. The article offers a theoretical understanding of lettering as a distinctive tool of visual communication. It has been established that in contemporary Ukrainian design, lettering gravitates toward calligraphic authenticity and typographic discipline, drawing on historical script traditions (ustav, semi-ustav, skoropys, etc.). By contrast, in the international context, illustrative and decorative approaches dominate. Unlike the Western tradition, Ukrainian lettering is characterized by formal precision, semantic depth, and cultural grounding. Thus, the practice of contemporary Ukrainian artists demonstrates that lettering is evolving and gaining pronounced cultural significance. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the article presents a holistic theoretical analysis of lettering as an autonomous tool within the system of visual communication. An updated authorial definition of the term “lettering” is proposed, reflecting its structural, functional, and aesthetic features in the contemporary visual environment. The contribution of Ukrainian and foreign type designers to the formation and development of lettering as a distinct direction of visual communication is explored. Practical relevance. The findings can be used in theoretical design studies, in educational practice, and in the professional practice of graphic and type design.
