Abstract

The article examines the genesis of the concept of “metacompetence” within psychological and pedagogical discourse and the specific features of its conceptualization in the professional training of future psychologists.

The aim of the study is to examine the genesis of the concept of “metacompetence”, systematize contemporary approaches to its understanding within psychological and pedagogical discourse, and identify the specific features of its conceptualization in the professional training of future psychologists.

Methods. The study employed theoretical and retrospective analysis, systematization, generalization, and comparative analysis of international and Ukrainian scholarly sources.

Results. The genesis of scholarly understandings of metacompetence was systematized, and five stages of its development were identified: pre-conceptual, competence-and-management, terminological-conceptual, structural-integrative, and contemporary interdisciplinary. The complementary nature of pedagogical and psychological approaches was established: the former reveals the place, functional purpose, and possibilities for the formation of metacompetence, while the latter explains the internal mechanisms underlying its functioning. The specific features of the metacompetence of future psychologists were substantiated in two interrelated aspects: as a meta-level in relation to the system of professional competences and as the ability to regulate one’s own personal and professional resources.

Conclusions. The metacompetence of a future psychologist is defined as an integrative personal and professional higher-order construct that enables a future specialist to consciously manage, integrate, regulate, transfer, and develop acquired professional competences and personal and professional resources in accordance with a specific professional situation and the changing demands of professional activity.
