Abstract

The purpose of the study is to conduct a typological analysis of higher education institution (HEI) logos as elements of visual identity, to generalize characteristic visual and graphic solutions and quantitative patterns of their use, and to scientifically substantiate the design of the logo for the Department of Design and Fashion Industry of Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrаіnian National University. Methodology. To achieve the stated aim, a visual-analytical method, comparative typological analysis, and elements of content analysis were applied. The object of the study was a sample of 100 HEI logos from Ukraine and the EU. The analysis was carried out using a structural classification of logos (text-based, symbolic, combined), as well as a set of criteria: readability, compositional integrity, level of detail, scalability, adaptability to digital formats, and reproducibility in monochrome and color versions. Results. As a result of the typological analysis of 100 higher education institution logos, the quantitative distribution of logo types was determined: 44% textbased, 40% combined, and 16% symbolic. The predominance of text-based and combined logos indicates their widespread use in shaping visual identity. The classification results were summarized and visualized in the form of a chart and examples of logos by type. Based on the obtained data, the logo for the Department of Design and Fashion Industry of Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrаіnian National University was designed. The project used the Exotc350 Bd BT typeface and the color palette #EF7F1A and #1A87F0. The logo’’s adaptability was ensured by its applicability in digital environments and printed materials, in both color and monochrome versions. Scientific novelty of the study lies in conducting a comparative typological analysis of Ukrainian and European HEI logos with the determination of the quantitative ratio of text-based, symbolic, and combined types, as well as in applying the obtained results to design the logo of the Department of Design and Fashion Industry of Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrаіnian National University, taking into account the requirements of digital adaptability. Practical relevance. The obtained results can be used for designing and modernizing the logos of departments and HEIs, as well as for developing methodological recommendations for the application of visual identity in the digital environment (social media, official web pages, presentation materials, etc.) and in printed products. The proposed approach to typological analysis of logos can be integrated into the educational process for training higher education students in the educational programs B2 “Design. Graphic Design” and B2 “Graphic Design and Fashion Industry”, and can also be used in the professional practice of designers when creating adaptive logos
