The physical principles of enhancing the anti-wear properties of lubricants using an electric field have been investigated. It has been established that the key physical factor in the interaction between a lubricating medium and an electric field is the dipole moment of its molecules. A mathematical model of the electric field's effect on hydrocarbon lubricating media has been further developed by correcting the relationships between field strength, surface tension, and the Maxwell stress tensor, which describes the mechanical tensile or compressive forces acting on the liquid surface layer under the influence of the field. Based on the Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution, a mathematical framework and a system of differential equations describing the probability of molecular coalescence and dissociation under an external field have been constructed. It has been confirmed that the alignment of dipole molecules along the field lines increases the local concentration of surfactants in the tribocontact zone, promotes the formation of a thicker lubricant film, reduces specific contact pressure, and decreases wear.
