Abstract

This paper investigates a linear mathematical model of interaction between network traffic overflow and DOS/DDoS attacks in a “network–server” information system. A formalized approach is proposed to describe the dynamics of the information flow and the level of system security, taking into account the intensity of threats, the speed of their impact, and the effectiveness of protective measures. A system of differential equations describing the system behavior near a stationary state is constructed and analyzed using the small perturbation method. It is shown that the linear model leads to the equation of a harmonic oscillator with a damped amplitude. The main parameters of the protection system are determined, including the natural frequency of oscillations, the oscillation period, and the damping coefficient. Discrete-time simulation modeling is performed, which makes it possible to identify regions of linear and nonlinear behavior of the system. The obtained results can be used to analyze the resilience of network and server resources to DOS attacks and to substantiate requirements for information security systems.
