The article presents a comparative analysis of the systems of professional and communicative training of air traffic controllers (ATCO) in the USA and Ukraine. The essence of the competency-based approach to training and assessment (Competency-Based Training and Assessment, CBTA), which is used by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and recommended by the Internation Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is revealed. The key competencies of ATCO are identified: communication, situational awareness, problem solving and decision-making, stress management, teamwork, technical and procedural knowledge. The features of educational and professional programs of Ukrainian aviation higher education institutions are analyzed and the possibilities of implementing constructive ideas from the American experience to improve the domestic system of training aviation specialists are substantiated.
