Abstract

The article analyzes the composition and characteristics of Moorish lawns, as well as the experience of European countries in integrating them into urban landscaping. It has been established that urban meadows possess a number of ecological, aesthetic, and economic advantages over traditional lawns, namely: a broader and more diverse species and cultivar composition, and consequently higher decorative value; the presence of a pleasant fragrance and prolonged flowering; minimal maintenance requirements, primarily due to the absence of the need for regular mowing and irrigation, since the plants used in Moorish lawns are drought-resistant and do not require systematic fertilization; and, most importantly, a positive impact on the ecological condition of the urban environment (preservation of biodiversity, water absorption, and improvement of soil quality and microclimatic conditions). Particular attention is paid to the prospects for implementing such plantings in Ukraine’s urban landscaping and to the potential challenges that may arise in the process. It is noted that the key factor for the successful integration of Moorish lawns lies in the quality of implementation: urban meadows should have a well-conceived concept and function, a diverse composition of flowering species, moderate grass height, and clearly defined boundaries. In addition, the introduction of such lawns requires a comprehensive approach – taking into account the climatic characteristics of Ukrainian cities, soil types, and the functional purpose of the areas; otherwise, without proper planning and public awareness efforts, there is a risk of misunderstanding among citizens. Purpose. Theoretical substantiation of the feasibility and prospects of using urban meadows in the landscaping of Ukraine based on the analysis of their species and cultivar composition, their impact on the microclimate, biodiversity, and ecological sustainability of urbanized areas. Methodology. The study is based on a comprehensive analysis of scientific and popular publications, as well as the landscaping programs of European cities, which enables the identification of current trends in the development of ecological and sustainable green infrastructure and the assessment of the prospects for implementing such projects in Ukraine. Scientific novelty. A comprehensive substantiation of the advantages of using urban flowering meadows as an alternative to traditional lawn coverings within the system of urban landscaping in Ukraine, as well as recommendations for their effective and successful implementation. Practical relevance. The results obtained may be used to develop sustainable urban landscaping programs in Ukraine. The materials of the article are relevant for local self-government authorities, landscape designers, specialists in landscape planning and urban greening, and may also be used in the educational process.
