Abstract

The article substantiates rendering as an artistic and rhetorical tool in design concept presentations, demonstrating that through atmosphere, stylization, and narrative it not only visualizes a project but also shapes emotional perception and persuades stakeholders. Purpose. To substantiate that renderings in design concept presentations function not merely as visualization tools but as rhetorical and artistic media conveying authorship, emotion, and meaning through visual techniques such as atmosphere, lighting, stylization, composition, and narrative framing. Methodology. The study combines a comparative case analysis of six rendering examples across architectural, interior, product, transportation, landscape, and installation design domains with a rubric-based analytical framework. Key evaluation criteria include stylization, atmosphere, materiality, affect (emotional impact), visual rhetoric, narrative, and stakeholder persuasion. Each rendering was examined using interpretive semiotic analysis to assess how these visual elements communicate beyond literal depiction. A summary table compares the cases across the rubric. Results. Renderings of design concepts function as artistic works, deliberately using lighting, color palette, composition, and detail to evoke a specific mood and tell the story of the project. Across all studied fields (architecture, interior, industrial design, etc.), visualizations not only communicate form but also elicit emotional responses, emphasize a distinctive authorial style, and influence how audiences perceive a project’s value. It was found that atmospheric qualities (mood, lighting and shadow) and narrative elements (scenes of user activity, environmental context) increase the persuasiveness of presentations for stakeholders. Scientific novelty. This research develops a novel integrated framework to analyze renderings as rhetorical artifacts in design, bridging multiple design disciplines. It provides empirical evidence that renderings do more than depict – they shape interpretations through artistic means, a perspective underexplored in prior literature. The study also introduces a structured rubric for evaluating the often “intangible” communicative qualities of renderings, which researchers and educators can further refine. Practical relevance. The insights offer tangible guidance for design practitioners and educators. Understanding rendering as a form of visual rhetoric encourages designers to move beyond purely photoreal output and consciously craft images that convey the project’s story and emotional core. The rubric can be used as a checklist in practice to ensure a concept rendering isn’t just technically accurate but also atmospherically rich, stylistically appropriate, and tuned to the target audience’s values. By treating renderings as artistic expressions with a persuasive narrative purpose, designers can create presentations that resonate more deeply with clients, stakeholders, and public audiences – ultimately improving communication and project success.
