Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of electrode material composition on the morphology and abrasive wear resistance of electrospark coatings formed on commercially pure titanium VT1-0 and titanium alloy VT6. Electrospark alloying was performed using composite ceramic CLAB-1, VK-8 hard alloy, Fe–15Cr–4B powder wire, and chromium. The experiments were conducted using an Elitron-22 installation at a short-circuit current of 2 A and an average specific treatment time of 2 min/cm². Abrasive wear was evaluated under conditions of a loosely fixed abrasive using quartz sand with a particle size of 250 μm. It was established that electrospark alloying produces a discrete, non-uniform surface relief, the characteristics of which depend on the electrode material. The formation of the hardened layer was shown to result in significant differences in wear behavior depending on the electrode type. Coatings based on VK-8 and Fe–15Cr–4B demonstrated the most stable behavior under abrasive loading, whereas the use of CLAB-1 and chromium did not provide a significant improvement in wear resistance compared with the untreated substrates. The lowest mass wear was recorded for the VK-8 coating: 0.002 g for VT1-0 and 0.0015 g for VT6, which was 7.5 and 3.3 times lower, respectively, than that of the unmodified substrates. The obtained results indicate that the effectiveness of electrospark surface strengthening is governed by a combination of factors associated with the formation of the surface-layer structure and its interaction with the substrate, enabling the targeted selection of electrode materials to improve the service properties of titanium.
