The aim of this study is to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the global scientific literature on the cold spray (CS) process in order to identify its major evolutionary trends, provide insights into the research trends in the field, and highlight the current state and future prospects of the technology for wear-resistant coating applications. The study is based on the analysis of a dataset comprising 4630 scientific publications indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded database of the Web of Science from 1996 to 2026. VOSviewer 1.6.20 software was employed to visualize international collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic clusters. The results reveal an exponential increase in scientific interest in the CS process beginning in the early 2000s. China (28.7%), the United States (18.4%), and Canada (10.4%) are the leading countries in terms of publication output. The keyword co-occurrence analysis identified four major thematic clusters representing the evolution of research in the field. It was demonstrated that the current focus of scientific research has shifted from the fundamental physics of gas-dynamic particle deposition to applied materials science, where the dominant trend is the development of metal-matrix composite coatings to enhance the tribological performance of engineering components. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the first comprehensive bibliometric assessment of the global development of CS technology from the perspectives of tribology and surface engineering. The findings demonstrate an evolutionary transition in research interests from optimizing the adhesion of individual particles to developing multifunctional wear-resistant coatings and additive restoration of worn surfaces. The results provide a roadmap for researchers and engineers in surface engineering by identifying the most promising directions for future research, particularly the incorporation of hard reinforcing phases (carbides and oxides) into ductile matrices to produce composite coatings with superior wear resistance.
